Art can change lives. Art can heal a broken soul. Art can help us stand up for what's right. Quoting Gerhard Richter: Art is the highest form of hope.
The last couple of weeks have been hard. Getting out of bed every morning meant finding another reason to be fearful, another reason to feel hopeless, tired and defeated. And having my art studio at home makes it hard to get work done... How can I work when so many things are at stake? But, there is one thing keeping me sane: art.
Sure, someone creating a beautiful illustration won't stop the Muslim Ban, but it's a way to start. And artists are doing an amazing job. Calling out lies, promoting empathy, defending human rights, protecting the environment... I'm constantly amazed by the talent, bravery and strength of my peers. So for your viewing pleasure, here are some recent favorite artworks.
I hope these works lift you and inspire you. Wherever you are, I'm sure there are reasons for you to take a stand and demand changes. Let's make the world a better place for all! May the force be with you. Stay engaged and stay positive.
P.S.: If you are thinking "quit it with the politics!", this is what I say back: I'm more than my pretty pictures (artist Lisa Congdon wrote a great article). Anyhow, my next post will be about illustration resources, I promise.
